About Artemis Highland 100

The Artemis Highland 100 is a stunning cycle route encompassing some of the most spectacular and historic areas of the Scottish Highlands.

Most of the route is on minor roads but there are two challenging off-road sections (of 12km and 21 km). All three routes encompass the stunning Glen Lyon. Teams or individuals will challenge themselves to complete the course within twelve hours.

The location

The event will be held on Saturday 11 September 2010, starting at 07.00 (Gold/Silver) or 10.00 (Bronze) at Kenmore playing fields in Kenmore, finishing at Killin.

Who can take part?

The Artemis Highland 100 is an event for everyone. More experienced cyclists and mountain bikers will relish the challenge of the longer routes, including the two off-road sections: the 12km 'Coffin Route' from Loch Rannoch to Glen Lyon on both Silver and Gold routes, and the Gold route's vigorous 22km circumnavigation of Loch Lyon. The bronze route is on minor roads throughout and is challenging but achievable for those new to cycling in the Highlands.

There will be plenty of refreshment stops throughout the course, offering, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, energy drinks, energy bars, chocolate, soup, rolls, sandwiches and water, roughly every 10Km to 15Km.

For those with young kids, they will be able to join you for the last 10km or 1km leg to the finish. All those wishing to join participants must register with the in advance. aged between 12 and 16 will be collected by the event organisers from the Innerwick water stop in time for them to join the participants at Glen Lochay. Parents will need to take account of an average 3 hour time lag for participants to reach Glen Lochay after leaving Innerwick. Kids aged between 8 and 12 can be dropped off by their parents at a pre-designated spot in Glen Lochay. It is vital for vehicular traffic to stay off the event route so please ensure you speak to the event organisers to get directions.

Bring your own bike, or hire one

  • Which bike to use is a regular question on this on/off-road challenge!
  • As the Bronze route is 100% on minor roads participants can use a road bike.
  • It is not possible to complete either Silver or Gold on a road bike and we recommend using a mountain bike with full off-road tyres. Experienced riders may choose, at their own risk, to use semi-slick tyres or a hybrid bike.
  • Gold participants should note that while 70% of the route is on minor roads, 40% of your time will be spent on the off-road sections
  • Please watch the 2009 DVD for a good overview of both off-road sections which are a combination of forest tracks, rough hill access roads with large uneven stones, some grassy muddy sections, plenty of small ditch/water crossings, a small section with some tree roots, a steep downhill section in to Innerwick and some wide (get your feet wet!) river crossings around Loch Lyon.

You can hire a bike from Wheels Cycle for £37.50 each. To arrange bike hire be sure to include your requirements on your registration form and include payment when sending through your registration fees. (Please note: helmets will be included in the hire but not puncture kits. Spare inner tube specification for hired mountain bikes is 26 (width) x 195 (diameter) with a car valve).

You'll collect your bike at the start in Kenmore, and return it to Wheels Cycle at the finish in Killin. What could be easier!

Please note: helmets are compulsory for all participants. No helmet, no event!
